RMIT University – HCMC Campus – Champion of The 2021-2022 CFA Institute Research Challenge in Vietnam

Four finalist teams fulfilled their mission to provide investment research suggestions for Gemadept Corporation – the Subject Company of this year’s competition and the leading company in Port Operations and Logistics in Vietnam towards the National Championship.

15 January 2022 – The Championship of the eleventh CFA Institute Research Challenge in Vietnam has been awardwed to RMIT University HCMC at the National Final Round. The winning team will represent Vietnam at the Asia Pacific Final Rounds, taken place in April and May 2022. Every year, CFA Institute, the global association of investment professionals, brings together over 5,000 students from over 1,000 colleges in almost 100 countries, as well as over 3,500 industry experts in this competition.

Participating in the CFA Institute Research Challenge, the student teams received hands-on mentoring and intense financial analysis training in order to promote best practices in equity research, shaping themselves as the future generation of financial professionals.

The finance and investment industry is a challenging environment, and we need young professionals who possess the required skills and knowledge as well as persistence, commitment, and ethical responsibility to help develop the capital market of Vietnam” says Mr. Vo Sang Xuan Vinh, CFA, representing CFA Institute members in Vietnam who organized the competition. “We wish the winning team all the best in the Asia-Pacific Final Round, taking place in April and May 2022.”

Only four student teams from 19 universities advanced to the National Final Round, including Foreign Trade University – Hanoi Campus, Foreign Trade University – HCMC Campus, RMIT University HCMC, and Banking Academy. Their mission was to provide investment research suggestions for Germadept Corporation – the Subject Company of this year’s competition and the leading company in Port operations and Logistics in Vietnam.

The four finalist teams presented their reports to a Judge Panel which consists of seniors and experts from the investment industry in Vietnam and the region, namely  Mr. Andrew Stotz, Ph.D., CFA, CEO –  Co-Founder of A. Stotz Investment Research; Mr. Ngo The Trieu, CFA – CEO, Head of Investment of Eastspring Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Ba Huy, CFA – Portfolio Manager of SSI Asset Management Co., Ltd; Mr. Nguyen Trieu Vinh, CFA, ACCA – Deputy Chief Investment Officer of Vietcombank Fund Management.

“We witnessed this remarkable professional judgment and a high level of enthusiasm from the finalist teams. This bodes well for the future of the finance industry in Vietnam and the rest of Asia Pacific,” says Mr. Andrew Stotz. “CFA Institute believes in the benefits of working with the academic community through the Research Challenge to help prepare the best and brightest students in each country for the rigor and responsibility of the finance profession.”

Entering its fifteenth year now, the CFA Institute Research Challenge offers students with the unique opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and their peers from the world’s top business schools. Ethics and professional standards are essential components of this challenge. Through the course of the competition, which requires intensive hours of preparation, participants received mentoring from a professional research analyst as they analyze a publicly-traded company, write a professional research report, and present their research results and recommendations to a high-profile panel of experts. This year, the Sub-Regional winners will compete in Regional Final & Global Final Rounds in New York City, the United  States in May 2022.

CFA Institute Research Challenge

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company. Each team produces an initiation-of-coverage report on their assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and shall defend their thesis in front of a panel of industry experts.
