CFA Institute Research Challenge 2017-2018: Kick-off Meeting

Vietnam, September 09, 2017 – Financial industry experts and university students gathered in Kick-off meetings in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City to mark the official opening of the prestigious CFA Institute ® Research Challenge 2017-2018, an annual competition organized by CFA Institute.

This annual competition attracts more than 5,000 students from 1,000 universities around the world, and leverages the great effort of more than 140 CFA member societies and 3,500 volunteers globally.

This is the 7^th year the competition is hosted in Vietnam, following six consecutive successful seasons. The CFA Community Vietnam plays the key role in coordinating, organizing and preparing for the competition.

Participating universities and the organizing team in Hanoi

This year, outstanding student teams from 15 universities in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City join the Vietnam Local CFAI Research Challenge. The teams will conduct research and analysis of a publicly traded company, and have an opportunity to interview the company’s management. Each team will write a research report, make recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their investment thesis to a high-profile panel of industry professionals.

Only one winning team is selected as the Vietnam representative team to battle with other countries’ champions in the Asia-Pacific Regional round. They also have a chance to advance to Global Final and strive for Global Champion in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April 2018. The subject company this year is Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company (Ticker: VJC), an airline service provider established in 2011 and recently listed on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange in February 2017.

The ultimate goal of CFA Institute ® Research Challenge is to promote ethics and best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts. During the competition, participants are brought about practical experiences and closely mentored by industry professionals. Sharing his personal experience with CFA Community Vietnam, Cong Thanh Nguyen from Foreign Trade University, Hanoi campus, First Runner-up Team of Research Challenge 2015-2016 put it: “I was truly inspired. Our team had a very enthusiastic and passionate mentor who guided us and inspired us to follow the equity research career. We also had an invaluable opportunity to exposed to a real-world professional working environment, which was an eye-opening experience for us as students”.

This year, participating university teams will be educated best equity research practices and ethics by CFA Institute members. The students also get valuable practical mentorship from industry professionals, who work at large financial investment institution such as Vietcombank Fund Management, Bao Viet Fund Management, ACB Securities, Lombard Investments and Viet Capital Securities etc.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company, and have an opportunity for management interview. Each team writes a research report on assigned company with a buy, sell, or hold recommendation and may be asked to present and defend their theses to a high-profile panel of industry professionals.
